This morning, we had the opportunity to hear about the Canadian Federation of University Women (cfuwbelleville.com) from veteran member Irene Hiebert and a newcomer Karen Mouck.

Women's University Federations were created in 1919 in Britain, the United States, and Canada to act as a non-partisan organization to support education and advance the status of women.  Today, there are 100 CFUW's in Canada providing scholarships to deserving high school students.  The Quinte Branch began in 1939 with 56 members and has grown to 150 members with 12 subsidiary groups.   Since 2000, it has provided $162,000 to 167 students, offering 12 scholarships each year and now one to a mature student going to Loyalist College.

In order to raise monies to fund scholarships, the CFUW had, from 1945 to 1972, organized house tours but now offers a garden tour of eight properties and includes a lunch at St. Thomas Anglican Church.  This year, the garden tour will take place on July 9, between 10am - 4pm (rain or shine) at a cost of $25 a ticket.

Thank you ladies for your enlightening presentation!
