Scrap metal clean up

On Sunday, October 30th, members started working to ready scrap metal that had been collected over the previous months for it to be recycled and turned into a profit to go towards our various club service projects in the community.

Fish & Chips Success!

A big shout-out to our everyone who came out and supported our fundraiser on Saturday night.  We sold-out and packed the Dugout Grill with 130 of our friends and fellow Rotarians.

We had a great evening of fellowship, food, and fun. All funds raised from the evening will be re-invested back into our local community, assisting those who need need it most.  A highlight of the evening was our presentation to Fletch and Quinte Sailability - our donation will help bring their fundraising goals into reality.  We also got to wish our PR Director Toni a happy birthday.

Thanks to our volunteers and our sponsors who made the evening such a success!

Cheers!

It was a clean sweep at QSR's annual Curl for Kids!

On Saturday, Feb 2, QSR once again hosted our annual ‘Curl for Kids’ bonspeil at the Quinte Curling Club.

A total of 10 teams raised a whopping $5200 which will be directed to local youth initiatives, including Camp Trillium. We were excited to welcome back Charlie Benson from the camp, who stopped by to accept a cheque for $10,000 - the amount our club raised during the recent Operation Red Nose season. In return, President Brigitte was honoured to receive a plaque from Charlie, thanking our club for all of our help over the years.

In addition to the Quinte Curling Club, QSR would like to thank the PR students from Loyalist College for their hard work leading up to - and during - our event. In addition, we’d like to thank our sponsors Maple Dale Cheese Inc and Sprague Foods for their generous (and absolutely delicious) donations to help feed our curlers.

Finally, a big shout-out to our team of QSR volunteers (and family) who helped ensure our event was a success.

Check out our morning photos and some team and action shots on our Facebook page.

Until next year...hurry hard!

Annual Curling Bonspiel Sweeps to Success

On February 3, QSR hosted our annual bonspiel fundraiser, with a new twist for 2018:  Curl for Kids.

With nine teams, we spent the morning out on the ice, learning about hog lines, hacks, and how to 'hurry hard'.  In total, over $4400 was raised, all of which will be re-invested into programs and organizations dedicated to helping children and youth in our local area.  After a morning on the ice and a tasty lunch, we welcomed Charlie Benson from Camp Trillium; his visit was two-fold:

  1. President Alison presented him with a cheque for over $7300, representing funds our club raised during Operation Red Nose in 2017, and in turn,
  2. Charlie presented a plaque signifying $100,000 raised and donated by Quinte Sunrise to Camp Trillium.  As a small club, this is a huge achievement and we are extremely proud
We are only able to do what we do with the generous support of our club members and community supporters, including those who participated in our bonspiel:

  • Quinte Curling Club
  • Quinte Health Care, Children's Treatment Centre
  • Quinte First Credit Union
  • C&C Delivery
  • Klemencic Homes
  • Belleville Dragon Boat Club
  • Team Terpstra

2017 Foundation Walk

It was a bit of an early rise for us, but a few QSR's made the trek into Whitby on September 11 to participate in the annual District Foundation Walk.

This fun fundraiser is for the Rotary Foundation, which then helps fund Rotary projects both locally and internationally.  Club members around the world are asked to donate $100 to the foundation annually, and QSR is proud to announce that we had 100% participation this year, raising over $4300 (#smallbutmighty).

With sunny skies and a beautiful setting, it was a wonderful opportunity for fellowship with Rotarians from all over the district.

Big thanks to Rotarians Sharon and Geoff for your work with the Foundation, to our members who  and for our members who were able to participate (Alison, Antonina, Brigitte, Gord, Sharon, and de faco members Kate & Dawson).

Happy New Year, and welcome President Alison!

Alison Ebbs takes over the helm of Quinte Sunrise!

A Rotarian for over 10 years, Alison has worked and/or been involved with Rotary for close to 20.  She was a member of the GSE team to Brazil in 2003 (D5050 - D4600) and helped charter Regina's Rotary Club of Regina Oskaya in 2009.  After moving back to BC that fall, she joined the Rotary Club of Abbotsford-Sumas and was a member there until 2013, when she and her husband relocated to the Quinte area.  Recognizing the power of Rotary, both locally and around the world (and especially when starting fresh in a new city) Alison quickly joined Quinte Sunrise and the rest is history.

Having lived in various locations, Rotary has been a steady force and the best way to get involved in a new community.  She is extremely proud, and very humbled, to be leading our great little club.

QSR held our 12th annual Curl for Camp Trillium bonspiel on Saturday, Feb 4, and it was deemed a massive success by everyone involved!

With 14 teams on the ice through the morning and afternoon, our curlers and generous sponsors raised well over $6600!  These funds will be combined with our efforts through the recent Operation Red Nose campaign, and will be dedicated to a new, 1/2-basketball court at Camp Trillium.

According to Event Coordinator and Past President Nancy Lewis:

"we are grateful to our curlers and sponsors for their fundraising efforts, and for our volunteers who worked hard leading up to - and through - the day.  Our entire club participates on several levels to ensure this bonspiel is a success and we are incredibly proud of our efforts.  This event is a great way for us to help others and share in some fun Rotary fellowship."

Team Mathany, led by Past President Janet, took home the trophy for Highest Fundraising Team, and all curlers went home after a delicious lunch prepared by our own Ann Lawrence.

Thanks to everyone who participated and helped...we look forward to seeing you next year!

Camp Trillium Clean-Up

On the weekend of September 10, a massive storm hit Prince Edward County leaving a lot of damage in its' wake; unfortunately, Camp Trillium wasn't spared.  With campers still arriving, a massive clean-up and repair was needed to get the camp back up and running.  Damaged roofs, broken windows, fallen trees, and many branches littered the area, so they put out an APB to various service clubs in the area who would be able to help clean up.

As such, several QSR members went out to the camp on September 15 to assist.  With most of the debris gone and the buildings (almost) repaired, it was a matter of clearing branches (and driving Gators!).  It felt great to help out one of our partner organizations...with the added bonus of fellowship in the glorious sunshine!

To see a few photos from the morning, check out our album on Facebook.  Thanks to the club members (Alison, Catherine, Janet, Paul, and Stewart) who participated!

February 26: Luke MacDonald & Sparks Fly

February 26: This morning, QSR heard a fascinating presentation from Luke MacDonald, who Skyped in from Halifax, NS, to talk about Sparks Fly (http://www.runforlife.ca/runsmart/).

This program works in conjunction with local school boards to put small spinning bikes in classrooms, encouraging kids to self-regulate themselves through physical activity. The program has proved incredibly successful, with over 500 bikes in classrooms across the country in less than a year.

Teachers and Administrators are finding the bikes help keep kids calm, which impacts the entire classroom. An added bonus is that kids who use the bikes are more attentive and ready to learn. As the vast majority of our members have school-aged kids, this initiative hit home in a powerful way.

Thanks Luke for taking the time to chat with us today!

August 14 - Len Kennedy, Habitat for Humanity

This morning, Len Kennedy, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Prince Edward-Hastings (www.habitatpeh.org) talked to QSR about Habitat's history in the area and the selection process for each new home.  Discussing the need for funding and volunteers to help with builds, Len touched on the local Re-Store, and how funds raised from that are returned to the organization, to continue helping local families.  New partnerships have recently been formed with Loyalist College and 8 Wing Trenton, ensuring that this organization will continue to make a difference here and around the world.

August 7 - Terry Cassidy, Community Partners for Success

On August 7, long-time Sidney Ward Counselor Terry Cassidy spoke to us about Community Partners for Success, an organization which he will soon be leaving after spending many years as a Director.  A non-profit organization dedicated to working with families with needs, its four location in Belleville, Trenton, Stirling, and Frankford have become nurturing places for parents and children.  CPS offers parental developmental activities, child rearing training, and after-school programmes for children, while working hard to link people with the organizations and services that they require.  The staff and volunteers identify each child's potential and work hard to find employment and educational opportunities for their parents.

July 24 - Paul Poirier, Building Homes in Vista Hermosa

Posted on Jul 23, 2014
One of our members, Paul Poirier, talked to the club about what it takes to build homes in Vista Hermosa, Mexico.  Through the Arthur Fredericks Community Builders (www.afcb.ca) here in Belleville, Paul and his team fundraise to build earthquake-proof homes for deserving families in Casa Maya Hermosa and Chimula.  Taking approximately six to eight weeks to construct a concrete house + patio, they spend several months down south helping these families get ahead.  The current plan is to build an additional eight to ten homes this coming winter, all while providing food and other basic necessities to the street children of San Cristobel de Las Casas.

In what looked to be a rainy afternoon as we loaded up our golf carts, we were fortunately able to put our umbrellas away after just a few minutes on the course and enjoyed a great afternoon of golf at the Bay of Quinte Golf Club. After golf we enjoyed a delicious dinner, prizes, and fellowship. Most importantly, funds were raised for the ongoing community giving efforts of the Rotary Club of Quinte Sunrise. Thanks to all of the golfers, volunteers, sponsors and donations!
